John the Baptist and the Word of God in the Gospel of John

The very first verse of the very first chapter, in this first gospel that we hear to day, in the beginning, was the word, and the word was with god. He is establishing jesus most deep identity, and that is that he is truly god. The baptist is being established now is not the messiah. He's the last of the old testament prophets who point the way to jesus. When john the baptist sees jesus coming towards him, he says, behold the lamb of god, who takes away the sin of the world.
