The Importance of Lying to Values

Cynicism is a casting of doubt on the motives that guide right conduct, in other words. The word derives from ancient philosophical cynicism from the sayings and doings of the original cynics of Greek antiquity. And then they follow us up into the late fourth century as charismatic figures rather than a branch ofocratic tradition. They're particularly important because they revolutionise moral discourse in their own time by insisting on the animal nature of human beings. So when you try to pitch high, I, the cynic, pitch low, I say it's the basis of what you're doing. Most human action is, thinks the cynic self-interest or ego or self-protection.
