In the US, wells that are used for injecting carbon dioxide into the ground have to get approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. Class six wells are designed for long-term storage of carbon dioxide, deep underground and qualify for certain tax credits. They also need to meet strict regulations, including protecting underground water sources. Currently, only two classics wells have been approved in the U.S., both operated by ADM in Illinois.
