The Null Hypothesis and the H1 Hypothesis
In astrophysics, it's quite rare that you actually see someone state this is the null hypothesis. What we normally end up doing is actually parameterizing both hypotheses so that they're the same thing. And then you would forward model from that point and figure out what region of parameter space results in disastrous impact with the planet.
