The First Rescue Operation Since Hundreds Drowned Off the Coast of Greece

Alice Cuddy has been on board a rescue vessel, patrolling the sea for migrant boats in distress. She met 86 boys and young men who have just been rescued from an overcrowded dark blue rubber raft as they attempted to make the dangerous crossing from Libya to Italy. Most of them come from the Gambia in Western Africa and began their journeys to Europe years ago. They were driven by the prospect of earning money in Europe to support their families back home. Some 90,000 asylum seekers and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean Sea to reach southern European countries so far this year. It's considered the most dangerous migration route in the world.
