Wild Mexican gray wolves are still considered inbred, which is going to pose challenges for their long-term survival and conservation. We've had a lot of success with cross-fostering with placing young pups into wild dens. And that's one way of introducing new genetics into our wild population. But we also have to address the fact that there, while mortality was lower in 2022, human-caused mortality is still the number one threat to Mexican gray wolves.
