The Decoupling of Money and the Medium of Exchange

The 23rd state in the union is putting in legislation to make gold and silver usable as currency. This will be, let's say, to the extent expires or whatever, you have to have a store of value that's separate from money. That is making me wonder about laws against owning gold. If I knew I could stockpile gold and it wouldn't be illegal to use it, that's the thing that worries me most.
