Plastic Saves Animals
When plastic was invented, it was partly created as a way to save animals. Things like piano keys and billiard balls were often made out of ivory from elephants' tusks. Thousands of elephants were being killed every year just so people could play the piano or comb their hair. A billiards company in New York City offered a $10,000 prize for anyone who could invent an alternative.
