How to Retort Torture and Not Condemn
A significant proportion of those accused confess without being tortured. And clearly, psychologically they are in a state where they aren't really going to put up very much resistance. So essentially, if you could resist torture and not confess, then you had a possibility of escaping execution. But i think also one should note that it's likely that the village will be far unanimous.
