Vikings understood the best way of taking over an area, maintaining control. They were much more interested in power and wealth than a norman way of life. Treve in england was what looked like this awesome takeover by william conqueror and his close family - then they're al each other's throats. In both cases, it ended up with non normans taking over because you were dealing basically with female inheritancs who were marrying into other dynasties.
