The Second Trial of Oscar Wilde
There was a sense that Wilde's name was irreparably solid, if not besmirched. He would have found the reentry into London literary culture very difficult had he succeeded at the end of the first trial and been found not guilty. The individuals who were providing the seemingly most impactful or most memorable testimony against Wilde were young men who were black mailers and male prostitutes. And so I think that glaring irony is one of the most important aspects of the unfairness of this trial.
