Suez crisis, not a shining moment for britain and france. Nasser emerged from the suez crisis more powerful than ever. Suez really redounds unto the present day. It's become almost a byword for a late imperial overstretch. The soviet union felt it needed to insure that the middle east and other states remained outside of soviet influence. We're now in a position to see the cold war not so much as an east versus west conflict but one between colonial powers on their own continents.
