What Is the Purpose of History?

We hope that it intrigues people at helps people feel that there are views on history, and the way they look at history, or what they want to read changes. We hope it makes people feel that history is more generous and expansive than they had hitherto realized. I expect that they'll find the book provocative in some ways, that it is intellectually stimulating, in other ways that they completely disagree with. And those are both responses that i think are valid and to be encouraged. Is it impossibly broad to ask the question, what do you think the purpose of history is? It is a very broad question.
