The Importance of Caste in India

Bimrowaram Jiamdagkar was a Dalit, untouchable leader of the independence era. He is seen as an exemplar of what India should be, how he came from the bottom. The problem is that whereas Nehru and Ambedkar would probably have thought that caste would fade away, it instead got more entrenched. There are parties who openly campaign on the basis of caste appeal.
