What's the Difference Between Free and Unfree?

In every village there would be a category of. people who were free and a category of people who are unfree, which is defined mainly by land holding. So right at the bottom you have your cottars, your smallholders, these are people with perhaps only an acre of land or something like that. And they cannot provide their own food from their holding. They don't have enough land to be able to feed their families. Of course they work to some extent for the better of neighbors, you know, if you've got 30 acres, particularly they don't have a sun tool to employ, you need to hire somebody. There's a sort of exchange of labor within the village
