The Role of the New Monarch in a State Funeral
The new monarch historically played no role in the funeral of their predecessor. In fact, at was almost a superstitious fear by a monarch to be associated too closely with death so they wouldn't attend. The exception was william the fourth who succeeded his brother george the fourth,. And not only did he attend a his brother's funeral, but he published a personal message of thanks in the gazette for all who had participated.
