The History of Blackholes and Einstein's Theory
Black holes were only really understood 50 years after einstein's theory of relativity was put forward. They're a singularity in space time, which is always surrounded by an event horizon. But i think it was clear from the start that you can't easily, or even with great difficulty, make a black hole in the laboratory. The second thing i'd say is that the situation is somewhat analogous to what you describe for dark matter. There's no direct evidence for a black hole. It's not surprising, because there black and tere also very small. However almost all physicists and astrophycists believe that they do exist, and that we can point to locations where they are found
