A blood panel should include a white blood cell count which is not specific or sensitive for prosthetic joint infection. Serum interleukin-6 has been shown to have the highest correlation with periprostatic joint infection. False positives can be seen in rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, AIDS and Padgett's disease of bone.
