Alexander the Great and the Debate of Luxury
Luxury was a very foreign concept to the Greeks, who were resource poor. Alexander adopted some of those elements of royal luxury that are associated with the Persians. The Greek Persian wars weaken it, and then Alexander sort of mops it all up. It's not like Persia was so infievable, as many historians have traditionally described. This is an empire so infebled and softened by luxury.
