Why God Created Man to Bring Glory to Himself

The Old Testament was not good to the Gnostics. Creation for them was a work of a lesser deity. God created man in order that he might have someone upon whom to bestow his blessings. Is it really that different than even our own children? You know, I didn't decide to have a child so I could bring glory to myself.
