The Cultural Experience of World War II
The idea that you can win a war without having women in your military has become culturally very dominant. In Britain, you kind of get an interesting halfway house where you get women who are allowed to do things for the war effort as long as it's not combat. Russia does mobilize women in combat in World War I as well as World War II. The Soviets have a very different conception of womanhood.
