The Prognosis of Amputations
Complications include wound healing complications, contractures, heterotopic ossification, infection, post-amputation neuroma formation, phantom limb pain, and bony overgrowth. An important factor in the prognosis of amputation is the initial decision-making in amputation versus reconstruction. The LEAP study impacts the decision to amputate the limb based on the severity of soft tissue injury as well as the absence of sensation in the plantar aspect of the foot.
