Plantation Economy in the Caribbean
The island is then seen as perfect territory for introducing a plantation economy. The portuguese had instituted an african slave trade already. Some of these captive africans will band together with some of the indigenous so there's a resistance and creates what is known as the first maroon treaty. And he was also himself resisting slavery. So there were indigenous people who were enslaved, but not in the numbers that were in a sea.
