The Ethical Aspect of the Fall
Man as man doesn't lose his nature as image of God, but he is ethically reoriented in his fall in a state. Man has stripped off righteousness and holiness and his love of truth. The only semblance of that that remains is after the fallen in state by means of common grace. And when Adam seeks to autonomously re-close himself, he's really reinforcing that sort of ethical aspect of the fall.
