How to Explain the Stock Market to the Kids

I was asked to teach a much easier group. This was a group of ninth graders from Harlem, it was a couple of years ago and it was just for one day a week for an hour. And I didn't know anything about the stock market. So I really thought long and hard about how I was going to explain the stock market to them. The first day of class I brought in a big,. one of those old time jars filled with jelly beans, big glass jar filled with jelly Beans. And I passed out three by five cards and I told them to count the rows and do whatever they had to do but write down how many jelly beans they thought were in the jar.
