The fear of cultural change was always the sub text of conservative politics, at times openly articulated. The new moral order that had come about after civil rights, you weren't supposed to openly be racist. That changed over the course of time, sort of disturbingly, into become more open right. And that was trump's key innovation. S you say the race is stuff out loud, then you're more likely to win than the people who try to hide it behind veiled language and dog whistles and so on.
