Malaysia's Pushback on European Tariffs on Palm Oil
Malaysia has been pushing back for years now on the European tariffs that apply to palm oil. Modern trade deals buy and large are not about reducing tariffs, particularly between rich countries. They are about setting standards - could be food standards or industry standards. So there's a real concern here that over time, because modern trade deals tend to include kind of regulatory alignment,. removing standards where they can't actually be proved to be harmful. It essentially gives big business lobbyists ever more power over our regulations and standards. The third concern is this awful corporate court system, which allows foreign corporations to sue governments in any way they like.
