The Importance of a Separate Teaching Faculty

In other parts of the world, we have a division of labor. Why don't we see that in say the humanities or the social sciences? In other words, have adjuncts that instead of being downtrodden, beleaguered, underpaid folks actually get prestige and respect for what they do. No one's ever wanted to do that. I think there's a feeling that it needs to be the experts who teach. But in fact, the best teachers are often not the faculty, rather not the appointed professors.
