Stability with the US and not having to consume energy on that side would allow Xi Jinping to shore up the economy, to shore up his diplomatic credentials again. Part of the narrative is that China's modernization doesn't any longer mean westernization. There is still the move toward trying to nurture the self-sufficiency in Chinese technologies but it doesn't want to include conflict with the US.
