HBO executives scrapped a Game of Thrones prequel because they felt like it wasn't good enough. Amazon famously spent a quarter of billion dollars buying the rights to Lord of the Rings. There's been a massive financial commitment and a cultural one too, that they've really planted their flag on these properties. It is something that they know they need when they look at the players in the space.
