I think the pleasures of spending a long time in a particular field is that when you arrive at a new piece of information, you kind of automatically know where it fits into the scheme of things. But I understand what you're saying. The present is so discombobulating. There is something inherently reassuring about the stability and the stimulus. That doesn't prevent you coming to new conclusions and new interpretations of history of being surprised by history. Like I can remember when I did The War of Armstrong book. One of the false assumptions that I'd always nourished about the game was that generally speaking, every generation was slightly more liberal than the last.
