Culture wars were a reaction to the way that academia was being decolonized and recolonized by a rather I suppose the simple word is woke approach to history. It basically meant academic professionals were made to conform to this stereotypical view of history seen in terms of European colonial domination, slavery and those sorts of Western exploitative practices which again would be used for current political purposes against the West.
