Did Contemporaries Protest Cromwell's Treatment of the Irish?
Cromwell is a stunningly intelligent and effective sologean politician. As a general, he never attacks from the front. He always takes people in the rear or on the wing when they're not expecting it. In politics he soothes people into a sense of complacency and then goes for them. And wherever possible, he tries to recruit, defeated enemies and bring them over to his side if he thinks they have talent. So the impression I'm getting from all of these answers, he was a canny political operator.
