Around that time, as you're operating and writing behind the Iron Curtain, your longtime literary agent, Phoebe Larmore, visited you while writing the Handmaid's Tale. I think she may have thought that I looked anxious or something. Anytime you sit down in front of a blank sheet of paper, it's a risk situation. But writing, unlike a lot of other art such as performance arts, you get a second chance. In fact, you get as many chances as there are drafts of your book. The anxieties are having to do with, is this any good? Am I going to finish it? Is this just rubbish? Should I start now?"
