Did the public know the true severity of the Cold War or were they protected by propaganda? And how long after the Cold War started? I think people knew fairly quickly that there was unease going on. Propaganda was very significant in a number of ways to try and persuade. The CIA funded radio free Europe, designed to inspire people to rise up against the Russians.
