In action we'll never had any fear, a tank commander was too busy. You were watching your map, looking at your own troop and talking to your driver. The worst of it was when you came out and you'd be told who'd gone. I don't think anybody minded being killed, it was how you were killed. We saw plenty of that - the German had its ammunition exposed in the top. There was no lid on the bin so when a German was hit it blew up. Very often the tank commander had his legs blown away.
