The Importance of Afghanistan
Afghanistan was the first really major military back for the soviet union in the course of its existence. It is a peculiar situation, because the soviets did not impose najebulla on afghanistan. And when the the taliban was about to overthrow the regime, they did not want to create a precedent in which a soviet time regime can be overthrown. So they militarily invested in maintaining nagibolas regime, in which they failed. This is a particular moment we should remember, the american support for the taliban.
