What Is a Good Education?

Diogenes laertius celebrated the value of a civilization that exalts individual cultivation as the high earthly attainment. Stilpo might see in ours an accom lished world, but not a wise one. He might see a comfortable people, a smart and ingenious people, but perhaps not a free people. We are no longer large enough or whole enough to embrace so much of the world. It haunts us our curious view that changing times must always alter or overtake, hard won wisdom.
