The Origins of Hongtaiji's Name

In December of 1629, Hongtaiji's forces achieved a surprising breakthrough south of the Great Wall. The Manchus began rampaging across Beijili, that is to say, the areas north of Beijing itself. General Yuan Chong Huan was arrested and charged with treason on January 13th, 1630. In the weeks and months to follow, Ming military forces suffered a series of humiliating defeats in Beizelie.
