Some have said the populism that fueled trump's victory was a result of, broadly speaking, the neo liberal policies of the 19 nineties. So your explanation is mostly a structural international relations explanation. But i guess you don't have to choose between those explanations, because they're both pushing in the same direction. As a nationalist, he was very sceptical of liberalism. Liberalism is universal ideology. At its heart, it's based on the assumption that every one on the planet has the same set of rights. Trump had none of that in him. He was a thorough going nationalist, and he was very explicit about that. That appealed to a lot of people. And it cut against engagement
