New Zealand
New Zealand has a limited spread of parties compared to other countries at the moment we only have five parties in Parliament. Do you think that this is harmed the long-term prospects of those minor parties too? Because if they are just always viewed as an alliance partner rather than something that stands on its own, is that damaging for those minor parties? Well it is because it sort of positions them as sidecars attached to these bigger engines, doesn't it? And it undercuts the bargaining power when it comes to government formation. But unfortunately I guess that's kind of worked out in New Zealand. As the MMP system matures we might see some changes there.
