The Key to Keeping Viral Populations Alive
Natural selection as a process is much stronger when the population is very large. So we also increase the power of selection if we allow large numbers of virus to be out there replicating. You're not going to lose, you're less likely to lose potentially fit variants from the virus's standpoint due to chance if you've got very large populations.
