Introduction
louis menand's new book, the free world, looks at american culture between 19 forty five and 19 65. The first 20 years of the calld war provided a context for people to think about art and ideas in a way that was very intense. So i was just drawn to the period because i was trying to figure out what these thinkers and artists were doing. And i found there were some great stories there.
