Madam X by John Singasargen is famous as being one of the most scandalous paintings in the history of art. But to our modern eyes, it seems almost conservative. It was so scandalous because of the reputation of the sitter or because of this bare shoulder seductiveness? I think it's just a strange work to focus on because it carried all this story. And yet we look at it today and it seems pretty harmless.
