Anselinger's bureau claimed that marijuana drastically slowed the perception of time, which is why jazz music sounded so different from any other style. They feared that jazz musicians and their use of narcotics would corrupt white Americans. Some would argue that his campaign against marijuana wasn't actually about the drug, but about targeting music he hated and a community he feared. There are numerous stories of black musicians being targeted for marijuana use, while white celebrities were shown leniency and discretion.
