Until the 1960s, it was commonly almost universally believed that various characteristics and behaviors were biologically determined in females. The idea that these things are immutable had to be attacked as a central core undergirding justification for women not being able to do what they want. This is where we came up with this whole concept of gender essentialism: Our body is not our destiny. We can do whatever we want as women.
