The Appalachian mountains were the remnants of a collapsed ring that once encircled the Earth. He also believed that since bones and feather quills were hollow, then so was the earth. John pinpointed the exact location of the polar openings using patterns of iso-therms vegetation and ice distribution. There are some obvious problems with his theory - vegetables need light to grow and need warmth.
