The Role of the CIO in the New Deal Coalition

The role of ideological radicals, who had articulated the common interests of mass production workers with one another across lines of race and skill and ethenicity, was wiped out. By the late forties and early fifties, increasingly was unable to play the role it had once played in a broad emancipatory movement that all sorts of people imagined themselves as linked to or part of. And so what i try to argue is that we should not think of the fifties and sixties as a period where class conflict stopped. Rather, class conflict became managed and kind of parochialized.
