The Uneasy Tension of Christianity From the Beginning

Paul is writing his letters to deal with specific situations that have arisen in the churches he founded. He clearly intended the letters to be read and reread, so they do take on a scriptural flavor. By then first Corinthians is well on its way to being a kind of scriptural book on a par with the Old Testament. Early Christian writers often quote the New Testament more than they do the old.
