The Montgomery bus boycott is undoubtedly a pivotal point in the story of the US Civil Rights Movement. Activists used forms of action such as sit-ins, which involved going somewhere where segregation law meant that you weren't supposed to go. Whatever form direct action took, it was always a community effort. On the ground organising created a civil rights movement out of what might otherwise have been an abstract Supreme Court decision.
